Some manifestations of climate change are easy to visualize—melting glaciers, rising sea levels, catastrophic storms. But permafrost—ground that stays frozen for at least two years—is often called the “invisible threat.” 🧊 Spanning nearly 9 million square miles across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a silent giant hidden beneath our feet.

As global temperatures rise, permafrost begins to thaw, releasing massive amounts of carbon and methane—greenhouse gases that drastically accelerate climate change. 🌡️ It’s estimated that permafrost stores twice the amount of carbon currently in the atmosphere. When released, it triggers a devastating feedback loop of warming.

To bring this powerful force to life, producer Charles Van Kirk, composer David Crowell, and Splice’s Max Belau traveled deep into Alaska in collaboration with climate scientists from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. 🎒🎙️ They gathered authentic field recordings from Denali National Park, capturing the sonic essence of this fragile ecosystem. Crowell—an Alaskan native—also recorded live saxophone performances to reflect the emotional and environmental weight of the moment. 🎷

Back in the studio, Van Kirk sculpted these sounds into a compelling experimental sample pack, featuring ambient textures, custom-built Sensory Percussion instruments, and evocative processed sax loops—all designed to mirror the tension, fragility, and eerie beauty of thawing landscapes. 🌫️🌿
