Features & Additional information
Field recordists and composer/performers Susie Ibarra and Jake Landau traveled to Tamale, Ghana to record the musicians of the Bizung School of Music and Dance––a local non-profit organization serving to preserve and promote traditional Dagomba culture practiced in Northern Ghana for more than a millennium.
Founded in 2010 by musician Mohammed Alidu and the Playing For Change Foundation, the Bizung School can be heard playing across their distinct percussion family, ranging from talking’s drums to the shekere, kagan, gun gone, and more. Vocals and layered ensemble loops extend the range of the collection––a work of music anthropology created to shine a light on a West African musical tradition both contemporary and ancient.
