West Africa presents the world’s most enriching percussive traditions. Originally used for three functions – Communication, Healing and Entertainment, the traditional drums of this vast region were an essential part of everyday lifestyle and culture.
Originated in the old Mali empire, we wanted to capture the sounds, drumming style and instructions used in today’s West African countries, from Senegal to Gambia, Mali, Guinea, Liberia & Burkina-Faso… We encoded six different drums, The Jung-Jung, Sangba, Djembe, Kenkeni, Balafon and a talking drum all played by legendary, Senegal born percussionist, master Malik Sow.
