Producer Romell Smith, aka Smiddy Smith, took the library of sounds we recorded at the Anguilla Music Academy and added more instrumentation to present his take on the sounds of Soca music.
The result is a pack full of loops and one-shots of energetic and electric dance rhythms with feel-good undertones straight from the home of Soca: Trinidad and Tobago. One of the sharp minds and talented musicians behind StarBlu Entertainment, Smiddy was surrounded by music lovers since childhood. His journey began with tin pans and wooden spoons at home, later playing alongside musicians in the band Rhapsody Next Generation (RNG), which exposed him to some of Trinidad’s finest artists like Destra Garcia, Machel Montano, Denise Belfon, Rikki Jai, Kes, and Olatunji, to name a few. The defining moment that fully pushed him into music was hearing a track by his now business partner Daryl Samuel that immediately felt like destiny—a feeling amplified when he met Ajari Jules and Juston London. Their collective creativity and passion led to the formation of StarBlu Entertainment. Smiddy began working in the music business in 2009, where he continued honing and enhancing his production techniques, taking inspiration from the people around him while staying true to his unique style. “I like to give people mood swings”, he says, speaking to the deep emotional connection he taps into when making music. It’s all about the listening experience, what listeners visualize when they hear a track, and how he can help them see the full picture. Living with the mantra of “Never doubt yourself”, StarBlu Entertainment has worked with artists from around the Caribbean region and internationally to produce songs from soca and dancehall to R&B and pop. Trinidad’s Destra Garcia, Fayann Lyons, Bunji Garlin, and Preedy; Barbados’ King Bubba FM, Allison Hinds, and Biggie Irie’ Jamaica’s Aidonia and Konshens; Bahama’s Wendi; and St. Lucia’s Big Vybe, Sedale; and Africa’s Seyi Shay and CDQ are among the line up of stars to have benefitted from the team’s producing talents. To date, some of the hit songs include “On My Way” by Machel Montano, “Soca Save My Life” by Destra, Stranger Things Riddim, and The For You Project.
